CAMPGROUND FEES EXPECTED TO RISE
A California business consultant believes that RVers will see an
increase in overnight fees to help pay for campground improvements.
A recent survey revealed that median campground fees were $19 to
$25.50 a night for two adults. "I think that we could expect to see
more aggressive and significant increases in rates over the next few
years because (campground operators) are putting money into their
businesses and they’re going to justify some more aggressive rate
increases to help them raise profits and to fund more improvements,"
consultant Bob MacKinnon told RV Business Magazine. Read more.

RETIRE IN AN RV FOR $1,000 A MONTH
Although the author (only identified as Robert) of this website later
learned that $1,000 a month really wasn't enough to retire on in an
RV, he provides a wealth of information on the subject in an extensive
online book that you can read here

. . and here's a GOOD TIP from Robert's book:
"Never look around behind you in your motorhome while driving. When
you're driving a car, you can quickly glance around in the back seat to
see what's going on without getting into too much trouble. A motorhome is
much different — you must keep your eyes on the road at all times. Due to
the size of the motorhome, taking your eyes off the road for a few seconds
can put you either on the wrong side of the road or in the ditch. I learned this
lesson very early, thankfully when the road was relatively empty. I learned
it so well that when the refrigerator fell open at Hoover Dam I merely asked
calmly what that crash was — didn't turn around or even glance back
through the inside rear-view mirror."

SOUTH DAKOTA STATE PARKS DENY SENIOR DISCOUNT
South Dakota lawmakers voted last week to kill a bill that would have
provided a 50 percent discount in state parks to seniors with a
National Park Service Golden Age Passport. Doug Hofer, state parks
director, said current fees of $11 to $15 daily must not be too high
because state campgrounds are getting record numbers of campers.
Supporters of the bill argued that if passed it would draw more senior
citizens to state parks and help fill campgrounds on weekdays when
use is generally light.

HIGHER SPEED LIMITS PROPOSED IN OREGON
An Oregon legislator has once again introduced a bill to raise the
speed limit on the state's major thoroughfares to as high as 75 mph.
The current limit is 65 mph. Oregon and Iowa are the only states west
of Mississippi with speed limits below 70 mph.

work in the factories, which are said to employ 40 percent of the
local work force.

RVers LOVE THEIR COMPUTERS
A survey of RV enthusiasts conducted on Workhorse Custom
Chassis
' Web site found that 76 percent of motor home owners
use a computer from their RVs, while 71 percent turn to the Internet
during trips. This stands in contrast to America's general population,
where only 47 percent use the Internet according to an April 2002
Harris Poll.

DIESEL PRICES UP
According to figures released by the Energy Department February 3,
the national average cost per gallon of diesel fuel rose this week to
$1.542 from an average price of $1.492 the week before. For the
first time in more than a year, the average price hit the $1.50 or

RV TECH TIP. By Mark Polk

Q: We plan to do several days of dry camping at a time. Is there a
way to calculate how much propane we will use?

A: There is a way to roughly calculate propane usage. You need to
know how much propane is in your RV when it is full. An RV propane
tank is full at 80 percent of its capacity to allow for expansion. Multiply
your propane container capacity using one of these formulas, (gallons or
pounds), to determine container BTU capacity. BTUs per gallon equal 91,502.
BTUs per pound equal 21,548. Divide your container BTU capacity by the
total BTU demand of the appliances you are using. BTU appliance demand
can normally be found on the appliance or in the appliance owner's manual.
This will give you an idea of how long you can expect your LP gas to last.
For example, if your RV propane container holds 14 gallons of LP gas when
it's full, you multiply 14 X 91,502. The result is 128,1028. You divide this
figure by the total BTU demand of appliances, let's say 43,800 BTUs, which
gives you approximately 29 hours of use.
Mark Polk is the producer of the video series RV Education 101.

BILL'S HINT:
"The biggest single load on the trailer battery is the gas furnace
blower. Try to hook-up or run your generator if you are using the
furnace heavily. Even then, the built-in charger may not keep up.
(From Trailers Made Easy)

RANDOM RV THOUGHT
Submitted by a reader who wishes to remain anonymous:
"Our friends recently built a half-million dollar home on the Texas
Gulf Coast, an hour's drive from their home. It's beautiful but
doesn't tempt us -- not when we can park our RV at a beach-front site
in a state park a mile away with the same view of the same beautiful
Gulf waters. And not when we pay $15 a night and needn't worry if
a hurricane bears down on the area because we can just hitch up
our home and drive away." Do you have a Random RV Thought?
