FROM CHUCK WOODBURY
editor, http://www.RVtraveler.com
Welcome to the 89th edition of RV Traveler.
I'll keep my statement short this time. Like most of you, I
am busy with holiday activities and festivities. Family
matters take center stage this time of year. I hope you
are able to be with your's this holiday or, if not, with
good friends.
I'm taking a break from publishing for two weeks, so this is
the last issue of RV Traveler for 2003. I'll return again on
Sunday, January 4.
From my family and me, I'd like to wish you the very happiest
of holidays and a prosperous and healthy 2004. My New Year's
resolution will be to get back on the road more often next year
to do some serious RV roaming of the USA and maybe even
another country or two.
Enjoy your holidays, and please, if you do any serious
celebrating, let someone else do the driving if you choose to
partake of beverages that make your head go fuzzy.
Or just drink root beer and keep it simple.
Cheers.

MAN RESCUES DOGS FROM BURNING MOTORHOME
An RVer driving on Calif. Route 99 could hardly have
expected that a simple backfire of his motorhome could
cause it to explode into flames, but that's what happened.
The owner couldn't get his cruise control to disengage
so he turned the engine key to off, then started it again.
But when it restarted it was with such force that the
muffler was blown in half and the fuel line tore apart,
spilling gas that ignited. The RVer did not even know of the
fire until passing motorists began honking and waving. After
exiting his rig, the RVer risked serious injury to re-enter
and rescue his dogs. Read more.

RV TECH CORNER with Mark Polk
Ozone in the air and UV rays from the sun shorten the life
of your tires. It is not uncommon to see RV tires with low
mileage and plenty of tread that are ruined by the damaging
effects of the ozone and UV rays. Ozone in the air causes tires
to dry rot and deteriorate and UV rays from the sun make it
happen quicker. This is especially true of the tires sidewall.
Inspect your tires for checking or cracks in the sidewalls. If
you notice any damage have them inspected by a professional.
There are basically two ways to protect your tires from these
elements. Keep them covered with covers that will block out
the sunlight when not in use, or for long-term storage remove
the tires and store them in a cool dry place away from the
sunlight. I also recommend that you place something like a piece
of wood between the ground and the tires. Be sure that
whatever you use is larger then the footprint of the tire.
Mark Polk is the host of the RV Education 101 series of RV
"how to" videos. Learn from Mark how to WINTERIZE an RV.

ABOUT THE EDITOR
Chuck Woodbury has been roaming America by RV off and on
for nearly two decades. During that time he published a quirky
travel newspaper about his adventures and for six years was
a member of the stable of writers for the New York Times
Syndicate. Nowadays, he lives near Seattle where he drinks
massive amounts of coffee (required by law) and travels when
he can in his motorhome and sometimes by plane when vast
expanses of saltwater would doom his RV to Titantic-status.
